What are CBDCs?

Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) are digital forms of a country’s national currency issued and regulated by the central bank. Unlike traditional physical currencies, CBDCs exist in a digital or electronic form, allowing for electronic transactions and transfers. CBDCs are considered legal tender and have the backing of the central government.

The key distinction between CBDCs and other digital currencies, like cryptocurrencies, is that CBDCs are centralized and typically operate on a permissioned blockchain or centralized ledger. They are issued and regulated by central authorities, providing a digital representation of a nation’s official currency with the aim of enhancing efficiency, reducing costs, and addressing certain issues in the existing financial system. CBDCs can coexist with physical cash and existing forms of money, providing a digital alternative for transactions and payments.
